There are so many, it’s impossible to pick a favorite. One that I heard hundreds of times is, “What’s goin’ on?” Steve said that to me almost every time he answered the phone when I called their house.

Aside from all of his nicknames (e.g. “The Gregger” for Greg), he sure had a lot of typical sayings! Most are hard to just write down, because it was the delivery that was so “Steve.” Can’t you just envision him answering the phone and saying, “Whaaat’s up?” in a way only he could? Or, I’d be talking to him after a particularly bad UCLA football game, and he sum the whole thing up with, “We suck.” Typical Steve. Let’s just get to the point and not dilly dally!

Steve would ALWAYS start our conversations with “my man”! It was our little way of knowing each other without having to say our name!
Steve was such a great guy, I will truly miss him!

I used to work @ La Follette in the accounting department, and when some of the ladies would come in late, (no names mentioned) Steve would tell them, “Well good morning! So glad you can join us today. Hope we’re not keeping you up!” I laughed so hard I almost fell outta my chair!
He always had a smile on his face & was always ready to help out if needed! My deepest sympathy goes out to the family! We are going to miss him dearly!!

I have not seen Steve for several years and am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. Steve is a kind and generous soul.
My favorite Steve-ism: “NUTTY!” He and I used to laugh and he loved that word to describe people, places and things, always in a very funny way.
He will be missed. My condolences to his entire family.

I just heard this terrible news. Steve is one of those rare people of whom no one could ever say a bad word.
The phrase that I remember Steve saying, so many times, which sums up his character, is “What do you need, Dave?” It got to be kind of a running joke. But it wasn’t a joke. It was a conscientious man trying to do whatever he could to help someone. That’s not just a Steve-ism – it’s Steve.

“Ellie’s here,” Steve would exclaim as he saw me first thing in the morning. So no matter how hard the morning started (at LJDFA) I now felt like the Queen of the Cubicle. And he always sensed when I was going to ask him to do something utterly impossible. “What’ve you got?” And then he would do the impossible. I have more than once described what a remarkable person Steve was whenever I wanted to hold up an example of how to behave to my grandchildren. What seems impossible now is that you are gone from us…too soon.

My mom Sandra Carlson & I worked at LaFollette w/Steve for many years – we have not seen him or talked to him in years but have nothing but the fondest memories of him. Our favorite “Steve-ism” is if Steve walked by and I would be at her desk or she at mine he without fail would ALWAYS say “Sandra do you know Renee? or visa versa” – it got us every time
Steve was a wonderful, kind, generous, funny man who was always a joy to be around and lit up any room he was in with his smile – he will be greatly missed but his memory will live on through those that knew him and loved him. Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family.

Steve’s nickname for me was “Holmes”.
When we discussed something stupid that someone did or said, he would consistently come back with the question/excamation: “What is THAT”?

Steve was always just Steve…no pretense, no airs, no crap…just Steve. Loyal, reliable and he always asked how I was doing and it was with genuine concern.
Stunned doesn’t convey the way I felt when I heard the news and as I type this…the feeling is still there.
Steve’s LOVE is his family, he was always talking about Anthony and/or Joyce and because of their loss, and that of the rest of his family, I am deeply saddened.
I have the Aiellos and their extended family in my prayers and will keep you all there through this tough time.
Steve and his Steve-isms will be missed.
God bless you Anthony and Joyce!

Show glad I got to see Steve at our family reunion. One thing Dave and I always remember about Steve, he never had a bad thing to say about anyone!
You can’t say that about to many people. We were blessed to have Steve in our family, your will be missed!
God Bless to Joyce and Anthony,

Steve had a lot of memorable sayings. One of my favorites was, “Thanks, Pal!” to me that wasn’t just a thank you salute, it was more like he really did appreciate what you did or helped him with at that moment. But the top of my list has to be how he would call Don Festler, “Uncle Don”. I would admire his enthusiasm when he would talk about Uncle Don. It didn’t matter if Uncle Don was having a bad or good day, he would just go off talking good things about Uncle Don. There were moments when I would think Uncle Don was more famous than Uncle Sam. He also would mention how grateful and thankful he was with Uncle Don and his family for always treating his son (Anthony) as one of their own, that was always great to hear. I will miss Steve dearly and I will always remember he’s great sense-of-humor. He was the type of person that would always make people feel comfortable and welcome…

I once asked Steve why, with all of his volunteer work with baseball and Anthony’s schools, he took time to volunteer at North Hollywood High. He said, “They (NHH) are neighbors and could use the help. You know, that’s what neighbors do – they help each other”.

My two favorite “Steve-isms” were when we would be on the phone and Steve would start off each of are conversations with “You never call”. The second one was “You guys stink” referring to my basketball team after we had played. I will truly miss hearing “You never call” and “You guys stink”.

One morning in “Homeroom” at Bishop High in Santa Barbara, our Homeroom Monitor, Miss Donna Meznarich was asking our class to come up with ideas for our Junior Class Homecoming Float for the “Big Games” Halftime festivities…
“She was all full of energy saying c’mon guys think of something with spirit” (Our Team Name was the Cardinals), Like “Lets Go Cards”, “Victory…it’s in the Cards”, “Cards have the Winning Hand”… C’mon People, think of Hallmark! she urged.
Without hesitation in an almost silent Homeroom Steve suddenly blurted out “How about… GET WELL CARDS?!”
To this day and even as I was typing this, I can Remember that statement, and it still makes me bust out laughing…. Thanks Steve
